Casita-made Ice Cream

12 June 2015

Peggy’s Cove, NS

We’d heard from a few people (both on this trip and back home) that Peggy’s Cove is a favorite destination in the Maritimes.  We stopped at a supermarket to grab some provisions for a picnic lunch, and showed up in Peggy’s Cove just around time to eat it.  (Of course, Eloise fell asleep in the stroller as soon as we got there, so she had her own picnic later).  We found a picnic table in the grass near the lighthouse overlooking some of the cove and surrounding waters.  It was a yummy picnic of prosciutto and salami, gouda cheese, a few pre-made grainy deli salads, rosemary bread, and some chicken parm.  Oh, and white wine, obvs.

The building with the most prime real estate near the lighthouse is a restaurant and tour bus parking lot.  Smooth, large boulders that allow for walking and climbing on them flank the lighthouse overlooking the sea.  I can only imagine how crowded they get in the summer months, as there were busloads of people on them already.

Eloise woke up and ate her lunch in the stroller while Dada and Sissy played hide & seek and Dada got some plaque-reading in.  On the way back to the car, we walked through the tiny cove town and stopped in at a fisherman’s shop, where he was making and selling lobster buoys, and other nautical décor.  It was a small but picturesque fishing town, and I took full advantage of that with my camera.

After we left, we went back to our campground to unload groceries and grill up some salmon for dinner.  After dinner, (and several Sissy meltdowns), we decided to test out the ice cream ball we got at L.L. Bean the first day of our trip.  It’s a two-sided ball that opens at both poles, allowing for ice and rock salt on one side, and the cream, sugar, and vanilla on the other.  Then, you roll it around and play with it for 10 minutes, scrape the sides, add more ice and salt as needed, and repeat.  We repeated twice as we weren’t vigorously shaking it the whole time.  When it was done, it was yummy and soft in the middle.  The part that stuck to the metal sides was a bit harder, and stayed frozen cold for quite some time, as Dada and I finished the ice cream ball after the girls went to bed over an episode of Anne of Green Gables, in preparation for our upcoming trip to PEI.

Baby Gear Used Today:

Grocery Store:  We brought the girls in the store in the City Mini GT Double.  Sissy didn’t stay in it the whole time, as she enjoys doing some of the shopping and riding on the back of the cart like Fancy Nancy does.  Usually I’d bring them both in just a cart, but the carts were super small, and with Dada there we had another set of pushing hands, so it worked out to use the stroller.

Peggy’s Cove:  When we saw the handicap-accessible signs, and we planned to have a picnic at a table with no high-chair or blanket to sit on, we decided to use the City Mini GT Double stroller here too, but brought the Ergo with us.  I used the Ergo for Eloise once we got up near the lighthouse onto the rocks; Sissy was fine walking the rocks with Dada.

Campground:  Once again, we grilled out and used the Fischer Price Folding Travel High Chair (with tray on so it doesn’t tip) on top of a toddler L.L. Bean camping chair for Eloise around the picnic table.
